A performance by San Antonio artists Kambri Hernandez and Diana Kersey. Both artists are inspired by the perseverance of loved ones who live with mental health disorders. People in all areas of our city are affected by mental illness, often suffering with the added insult of negative stereotypes.
The intention of this performance is to honor the daily struggles and successes of people living with these disorders and for our community to discover, respect, and celebrate the beauty that is inherent in their endeavors.
The performance took place using a pottery kick wheel with glowing clay and water illuminated by UV lighting. The artists worked the clay until it became precariously thin, out of balance, and ultimately collapsed. They then remove the clay from the wheel, prepared the same clay, and repeated the process throughout their four-hour performance during the 2016 Luminaria: San Antonio Arts Festival.
It is the artists intent that viewing the process of creating a vessel, working it until it collapses, and then persevering by creating it again will act as a metaphor for the ebb and flow of all people who are affected by mental illness. The performance ended with a beautiful vessel, representing all that is learned and endured during the process of its creation.
